Rome in three days: neighbourhoods and a realistic route

Rome rewards a well-connected base and days organised around nearby sights. Leave room for walking, queues and breaks rather than trying to cross the city for every visit.

Where to stay

The historic centre around the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Trevi makes many first-time visits walkable. Demand and noise can be high: check the room, lift and access to the building. Monti and the Colosseum area suit archaeological visits, but check the actual walk to the metro rather than a map label.

Prati is a practical residential base for the Vatican. Factor in the longer journey to the Colosseum and other sites on the opposite side of the centre. With luggage or limited mobility, 500 metres over cobbles can feel very different from the same distance on a flat pavement.

A flexible three-day itinerary

Day one: group the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine, then allow time for the Capitoline area or the former Jewish Ghetto. Do not schedule another timed entrance immediately after a major archaeological visit.

Day two: connect Trevi, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori on foot, with a break by the Tiber. Day three: allow adequate time for the Vatican, then choose one further area such as Prati, Trastevere or Villa Borghese instead of combining them all.

Arrival and getting around

Fiumicino has train and bus connections; Ciampino requires the appropriate bus or rail-and-metro connection for your destination. Choose the route to your accommodation, not just the cheapest advertised airport ticket. Consult the airport and official transport information for current fares and the final departure of the day.

Check the real walking route between stops and entrances. Add a buffer for security checks, crowded areas and accessibility requirements; a suggested daily route is not confirmation of entry times or ticket availability.

Before confirming

Compare the final accommodation cost, including taxes, luggage-related charges, transfers and cancellation conditions. Check travel dates and the exact admission rules for each attraction before fixing the order of visits.

Confirm lifts, step-free access and any assistance you need directly with the relevant provider. Save booking references, addresses and contact details offline. Avoid overlapping reservations: a relaxed route through one area is more useful than a list of sights you cannot realistically reach.
